Networks Mr Arthur
Aims of Lesson 1 What is a Stand Alone Computer System? What is a Network? Local Area Networks Wide Area Networks
Stand Alone/Networked A Stand Alone computer system is a computer that is not connected to any other A network is a linked set of computer systems that are capable of sharing programs, data and sending messages
Local Area Networks A LAN is a network of computers connected over a small geographical area, usually inside the 1 building Examples School LAN LAN in your house Uses Sharing printers Sharing files and data. Transmission Media Copper wire, fibre optic, wireless
Wide Area Networks A WAN is a network of computers over a large geographical area, such as across a country or the world. Examples The Internet Companies like the BBC communicating across the world Uses Video-conferencing, use of e-mail, live chat Multi-user databases E-commerce and entertainment Transmission Media Fibre Optic, Microwave transmission, Satellite links
Advantages of Networks You can share hardware therefore saving money They allow you to communicate with people via email, video conferencing etc You can buy and sell goods online You can share anti virus software You can log on to lots of different stations and still access your own documents
Aims of Lesson 2 Last Lesson What is a Stand Alone Computer System? What is a Network? Local Area Networks Wide Area Networks Transmission Media for LANs and WANs Today’s Lesson Network Security Client/Server Networks Network Interface Cards Freeware/Shareware
Network Security Passwords = Users have passwords to keep their data secure and prevent unwanted tampering with data Encryption = putting data into a code to prevent it being intercepted, for example your bank details Physical Methods Door lock Finger print reader Number keypad Others?
Client/Server Networks Client/Server Networks Where there are many clients that access files stored on servers Network Interface card A NIC is fitted inside a computer system to allow it to communicate with a computer network Freeware This is software you get for free and there are no restrictions on copying etc, i.e ITunes Shareware This is software you get a 30 day trial for and then have to pay for it
Networks = What you need to know! What is a Stand Alone Computer System? What is a Network? Local Area Networks Wide Area Networks Transmission Media for LANs and WANs LANs = Copper wire/Fibre Optic/Wireless WANs = Microwave/Fibre Optic/Satellite Advantages of LANs? Share hardware Share files Send emails Network Security Passwords Encryption Physical Methods? Client/Server Network Network Interface Card
